TerraGraphiX Launches New ASP Health Care Module to Better Track Surgical Equipment and Instruments
Indianapolis, Ind. (Nov 22, 2002) - According to the American Hospital Association, 72 percent of the 5,810 U.S.
hospitals have less than 200 beds. Often times, these smaller hospitals do not have the technology budgets to install
instrument-tracking software to trace its surgical instruments and equipment.
Thanks to a new web-based application, Alex Hosted Services, medium and smaller-sized hospitals and surgery centers can
now keep track of vital surgical equipment on the Web without the cost of installing expensive software and computer
equipment.
Alex Hosted Services, developed by Carmel, Indiana-based TerraGraphiX, is one of the first Web-based Application
Service Provider (ASP) modules for the health care industry.
By using Alex Hosted Services, hospitals can now use the power of the Internet to keep track of its numerous surgical
instrument sets and equipment as they flow from operating rooms through decontamination to storage, and everywhere in
between. Hospital staff can access the data from anywhere in the world via a highly secure Internet connection. The result
is a more cost-efficient and sterile surgical environment and better healthcare for patients.
It also has major health care implications. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
hospital-acquired infections are the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, killing 90,000 people per year.
"Alex Hosted Services is an incredible tool for smaller-sized hospitals," said Todd Wood, CEO of TerraGraphiX. "Not
only can it help prevent the spread of infection by making sure instrument sets have been properly decontaminated and
sterilized, but it also helps hospitals decrease instrument replacement costs by several thousands of dollars per month."
Wood estimates that some U.S. hospitals lose up to $8,000 worth of surgical instruments and equipment each month. He
said Alex Hosted Services could save an average hospital $45,000 per facility.
There are currently 44 hospitals in North America and Canada using the on-site version of the Alex Software.
